We continue to choose charismatic leaders that will sing us lullabies of a mythical Africa in familiar Afrikan cadence….These lullabies are a brew of insurrection and homophobia, gilt tongue, transmisogyny and misogyny, revolution and internalized white supremacy. These lullabies are sweetly poisonous. by Joy KMT “Liberation or Masturbation: The Case of The Revolutionary Circle-Jerk” Powerful essay on Activism (via navigatethestream)

The function, the very serious function, of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language, so you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly, so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of that is necessary. There will always be one more thing. Toni Morrison

One of the most durable paradoxes of white supremacy - the idea that those who are closest to an experience of oppression are its least credible witnesses.

This is the type of violence—from microaggressions to epistemic violence to emotional/physical violence to enslavement/genocide—that gets justified by asserting that the oppressor is “objective” and “logical” and thereby “credible.” As if there is objectivity in choosing to oppress. As if the emotions of entitlement, indifference, greed or hatred aren’t involved.
